A Short History

The story of Boat of Garten Golf Club began in 1898, when a modest 6-hole course was laid out amid the heather and pine forests of Strathspey. In 1930, the club entered a new era when the legendary James Braid was commissioned to create an 18-hole layout, bringing his trademark blend of strategy and natural design to this beautiful Highland setting.

Working with the rolling terrain and exceptional turf, Braid fashioned a course of remarkable individuality. Winding through heather, whin, pine and silver birch, “The Boat” rewards accuracy and imagination rather than power, with firm fairways and subtle undulations lending the layout a links-like character despite its inland setting.

Throughout the decades, the course has become renowned for its quirky charm and memorable holes. From the unusual par-3 opener to the famous 6th, “Avenue”, framed by towering trees, and the dramatic 15th, “Gully”, Boat of Garten has long been regarded as one of Scotland’s most distinctive and enjoyable tests of golf. Its modest yardage belies a layout that continues to challenge golfers of every ability.

Adding to its unique character is the heritage Strathspey Railway, whose beautifully restored steam trains still pass alongside the fairways against the backdrop of the Cairngorm Mountains. Affectionately known as the “Gleneagles of the North”, Boat of Garten remains one of the Highlands’ most treasured golfing destinations, where timeless architecture, abundant wildlife and unforgettable scenery combine to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

The 12th is in a superb setting, the birch woods and the mountains beyond, I don’t think there is any equals it.
