Old Tom Morris Golf Trail

In the Scottish Highlands, Old Tom Morris’s enduring legacy lives on through five historic courses that reflect the very foundations of the game.

The Old Tom Morris Highlands Golf Trail invites you to experience Highland golf in its purest form — timeless links shaped by one of the sport’s true pioneers.

Old Tom Morris is one of the founding figures of modern golf, a four-time winner of The Open Championship and the keeper of the game’s traditions during its formative years. Born in St Andrews, he worked under Allan Robertson before becoming the long-serving professional and greenkeeper at St Andrews Links, where his influence helped shape the Old Course into the template for championship golf.

His Open victories in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867 , including a win at age 46, cemented his reputation not only as a champion but as one of the sport’s earliest great ambassadors.Beyond competition, Morris was a pioneering course architect and greenkeeper whose philosophy of working with natural terrain defined early links design. He was instrumental in developing or refining many of Scotland’s most storied layouts, including Muirfield, Carnoustie Golf Links and Royal Dornoch Golf Club.

His legacy lives on in the rolling fairways, strategic bunkering and natural greens that continue to challenge and inspire golfers worldwide. An Old Tom Morris trail through the Highlands offers the opportunity to experience the game in its purest, most historic form, shaped by the very hands that helped define it.
