A Short History
Founded in 1988, Durness Golf Club is a remarkable testament to the vision and determination of local enthusiasts Lachie Ross, Ian Morrison and Francis Keith. Set above the stunning shores of Balnakeil Bay, this remote links was discovered rather than created, with the natural landscape providing a course that feels as though it has existed for centuries.
Occupying an environmentally sensitive site, the club embraces a minimalist approach to maintenance, allowing the rugged terrain to remain largely untouched. Grazing sheep act as natural greenkeepers for a few weeks a year during lambing season, while rocky outcrops, dramatic ridges and sweeping coastal views combine to create a golfing experience that is wonderfully wild and unmistakably Highland.
The ingenious layout features nine greens and eighteen tees, ensuring the second loop presents an entirely different challenge. Memorable holes abound, from the par-5 6th beside Loch Lanlish to the spectacular closing par-3, played across a sea inlet to a green perched above the Atlantic: a hole widely regarded as one of the most dramatic finishes in British golf.
Although international recognition has followed, including a place among the world's finest 9-hole courses, Durness remains refreshingly authentic. Visitors are still greeted by the club's famous honesty box and a warm Highland welcome, preserving the simple spirit and enduring charm that make this extraordinary links one of Scotland's most memorable golfing destinations.
