Royal Dornoch

Golf has been played across the world’s most northerly championship links for over four centuries. Entwined in history, at Royal Dornoch the game is inseparable from the ancient Highlands town it belongs to.

Offering a timeless and quintessential links challenge, the holes at Royal Dornoch are set against a stunning backdrop of the deserted, windswept beach and the Dornoch Firth beyond.

Short History

The earliest surviving written evidence of golf being played on the links at Dornoch dates to 1616 when Sir Robert Gordon claimed expenses of £10 and £12 for the purchase of golf clubs and balls in his role as tutor to his young nephew, the 13th Earl of Sutherland.

While, in 1931, Scotland’s courts declared golf had been played on the links “since time immemorial,” the club itself was founded in 1877, initially as a nine-hole course until Old Tom Morris was invited to extend the layout in 1886.

The young secretary at the time, John Sutherland, was self-taught in the art of greenkeeping and gradually refined Old Tom’s handiwork. The influential Sutherland would become Dornoch’s own “father of golf,” writing articles for the London Daily News and Golf Illustrated and representing the club at events such as the 1909 Amateur at Muirfield.
