Short History

Spey Bay Logo.png

Founded in 1907, Spey Bay Golf Club was originally laid out by the legendary Scottish golfer and club maker Ben Sayers, whose influence helped shape some of the game’s most respected early courses. His traditional “out and back” routing embraced the natural contours of the Moray coastline, creating a links course renowned for its rugged beauty, strategic character and memorable seaside setting.

The land itself tells an even older story. Formed from raised storm-beach ridges created thousands of years ago, the course weaves through natural valleys framed by shingle banks, gorse and heather, giving Spey Bay its distinctive links identity. Over the years, the club has welcomed notable visitors including former Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, whose connection to the club remains part of its rich heritage today.

While coastal storms reshaped parts of the original layout during the late twentieth century, the spirit of Sayers’ design has endured. Now under the stewardship of LinksDAO, Spey Bay is embarking on an ambitious new chapter, with a reversible 18-hole redesign by Clayton, DeVries & Pont set to transform the course into one of Scotland’s most intriguing modern links destinations.
